Paige Kassab, Slippery Rock junior
Several former District 10 athletes recorded impressive performances Friday night at the Youngstown State Invitational at the Watson and Tressel Training Site. The meet included Division I, II and III schools.
Thiel senior Nic Jones, a Franklin graduate, placed second in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 8.25 inches. Jones’ teammate, senior R.J. Malson from Greenville, placed 12th in the shot put with his best toss of the season (44-11).
Meanwhile, Thiel freshman sprinter Jessa Covine, a Maplewood graduate, had two personal-best times in the 200- and 60-meter dashes. She finished 33rd in the 200-meter dash (28.97 seconds) and 34th in the 60-meter dash (8.69).
Slippery Rock’s Paige Kassab, a junior jumper from Meadville, tied for third in the long jump (1.62 meters, 5-3.75) and placed 10th in the triple jump (10.66 meters, 34-11.75).
Slippery Rock sprinter Erik Record, a sophomore from Grove City, placed 10th in the 200 dash (22.72), while The Rock sophomore Jacob VanHouten (Eisenhower) ran a leg on the second-place 1,600 relay team (3:16.19).
Duquesne freshman Sophia Fustos, a Hickory graduate, placed 10th in the shot put (11.81 meters/38 feet, 9 inches) and 21st in the weight throw (11.91/39-1).
Westminster junior Nick Fiorentino, a Franklin graduate who broke the school record in the weight throw two weeks ago at Oberlin College, finished ninth in the shot put with a toss of 13.76 meters (45 feet, 1.75 inches). He also placed 20th in the weight throw (12.97 metera/42-6.75).
